Frank La Rue, United Nations Special
Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion
and expression, called into question the Supreme Court’s order to seize nearly
25 million bolívares from news channel Globovisión, stating that it is a form of state censorship.
"The confiscation of assets is a form of censorship that attempts to shut down the media with the appearance of lawfulness, through legal actions—in this case court actions. I find this to be truly questionable and worthy of criticism,” said La Rue in a telephone conversation with the news channel. He added, "As the United Nations Rapporteur, it is very important for me to make clear that this is a form of state censorship that shuts down and restricts the media.”
